Threads of
Resilience
Synopsis
Inspired by the ‘Letters from a Prison in Tehran’, THREADS OF RESILIENCE focuses on “The Human act of resistance” in places and communities that are transformed by grass-roots activism. The “letters” were used by activists during the Zero Covid protests as a means to bypass Chinese State censorship.
These “letters” reflect on the activists’ experiences of imprisonment and police brutality, through the experience of Tehran citizens protesting for #WomenLifeFreedom movement, using Iranian identities and placenames. How much - or how little - information (geographical and socio-political) is necessary to gain the perception of human resistance.
Sara Amini, Dora Yuemin Cheng, and Jaber Ramezan want to unpack what their Iranian and Chinese identities and perceptions mean, especially as they are both migrant artists working in Europe.
Highlighting the global experience of resistance in states where oppressive tactics are used, juxtaposed in the daily freedoms and acts of human resilience & resistance in Europe, and how they differ between those in London and Berlin.
Dora Yeumin Cheng is an ITI Academy Fellow.
This production is currently in development following Sara and Dora meeting at ITI Academy Conference 2023.
Threads of Resilience is supported by Internationales Theaterinstitut Germany and International Cultural Exchange 2024 (Cultural Administration Berlin).
